Suspected Colonial Park burglars caught

Two Lubbock men are in jail after Clovis police say they caught them in the act of trying to burglarize a home in Colonial Park.

Andrew Melendez, 26, and Christopher Luna, 21, were arrested shortly after 1:30 p.m. Thursday by police responding to a burglary in progress reported by neighbors in the 1500 block of Fairway Terrace.

Police spokesman Sgt. Daron Roach said neighbors reported seeing the two men park a white pickup in a nearby alley and enter the home.

Roach said when an officer arrived, he confronted one man in the back yard, arrested him, and located the white pickup. Roach said backup officers arrived to help clear the house.

The house was cleared of any further suspects, Roach said, when another man walked up and told investigators his work truck had been stolen and indicated the white pickup was his truck.

Roach said the man in custody told an officer the man trying to get the truck was actually his partner and they had both been inside the house. The second suspect was arrested and both later confessed, according to Roach.

Melendez and Luna were each charged with felony aggravated burglary, larceny over $20,000 and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary. Luna was also charged with being an out of state fugitive.

The two were being held at Curry County jail in lieu of bonds ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 for each of the various charges.
