Children aren’t the only ones with wish lists this time of year.
Representatives of local government agencies and school districts stood before the area’s state legislators Thursday evening, asking them to support their capital outlay projects in the upcoming legislative session.
Roosevelt County Manager Charlene Webb said the county’s biggest project will be security upgrades to the Roosevelt County Detention Center at a cost of $285,000.
Given a pair of jailbreaks that occurred in June and September, Webb said there is an urgency to complete the project to prevent future breakout attempts.
Webb told the panel of legislators, which included Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, and Reps. Dennis Roch, R-Texico, and Bob Wooley, R-Roswell, all of the county’s projects are in phases in case only partial funding is secured. The first phase of the jail project would be the installation of a perimeter fence, followed by additional cameras to increase coverage.
The other projects the county requested included various road improvements and upgrades to the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds. The total package cost of the county’s requests is $1.8 million.
Portales City Manager Doug Redmond presented six capital outlay projects for the city, two of which involved the city’s water.
In addition to upgrades to Portales’ water system, Redmond requested $187,000 for the city to continue its work in the well field.
Another large project would be to open and operate a fire sub station on the North side of Portales. Being that trains run the risk of delaying response time of fire and emergency medical services, a substation across the tracks would reduce the response time of those services.
The city’s package totaled $1.2 million.
