Police investigating break-in at Sunland

Police say Sunland Inc. incurred at least $30,000 worth of damage from a burglary that occurred either Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

Portales Chief of Police Pat Gallegos said police are still investigating the incident, which they believe involved at least two people.

Gallegos said police have leads on the identity of suspects but declined to say if they are former employees of the defunct peanut processing company.

Gallegos said the suspects broke a window in Sunland’s retail store to gain entry. He added the peanut butter plant was also vandalized.

Gallegos said at least one television was stolen, but most of the damage costs are from the suspects vandalizing the business.

No one was at the plant at the time of the burglary, Gallegos said.

Gallegos said the burglary was reported Wednesday morning by Sunland personnel, but is unsure when the actual incident occurred and had not reviewed the camera footage as of Wednesday night.
