Club Notes — Sept. 22

Portales Woman’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met on Sept. 11, with President, Julie Nickles presiding. Esther Bargas led the pledges. Jan Smartnick led the Club Collect, and the invocation was given by Teresa Howard.

The minutes from the previous meeting were approved, and the treasurer’s report was filed. The budget for 2013-2014 was discussed and will be voted on in October. There were 16 members and five guests present.

Sheryl Borden introduced Hannah Evans, the club’s Hugh O’Brien Youth recipient and she told about her experience and thanked the club for their financial support. Gaynelle Thomas, International Affairs chair, told about a mission in Nicaragua that needed medical supplies. The club approved a board recommendation to support this project.

Nickles presented Denise Burnett, director of Portales Public Library, with a book on New Mexico in memory of Jane Hilliard. Hilliard’s son, John expressed appreciation to the club.

The club also approved a board recommendation to sponsor the Carson & Barnes Circus next spring as a fundraiser. Plans for the District III Convention on Oct. 12 in Portales were discussed. Thomas and Howard were elected as delegates.

Bargas introduced her hostess committee: Beva Spotswood, Howard and Nickles.

Steven Gamble, president of ENMU, discussed the stadium for the campus and explained how it would be funded. He also gave an update on the university. Gamble and Evans were presented certificates of appreciation by the president.

The next meeting is 11:30 a.m. Oct. 9 at the club building.

Encanto Garden Club

The September meeting of Encanto Garden Club was held at the Curry County Extension Office, where Luther Dunlap, the new extension agent, gave a most informative talk on all the various horticulture questions put to him from club members.

The meeting was called to order by President Jacque Wuest. Bobbie Lyons provided refreshments and Barbara Voges won a Thomas Kinkade door prize.

After a short business meeting, several members proceeded to lunch and then to view the beautiful landscaped property of Nick Fischer and Nancy Fischer.

Next meeting is to be 9:30 a.m. Oct. 9 at Muffley’s Back Door in Clovis. Visitors are welcome. Call 762-6955 for information.
