My oasis? Somewhere with ice cream

I know I’m not the only one thinking it, if it’s this hot now, how bad will it be in July and August? I’m a coastal girl, a heat wave for us is two days of 80-degree weather.

I took many trips to New York City in the summer as a child and I’d stay up way too late because the heat was unbearable.

When I first got off the plane in June 2007 to tour my college campus in Houston, I told my mother something was wrong with the air and she just laughed at me. Curly hair and sticky skin was my introduction to Houston’s humidity. I’m surprised I survived four years there.

Now I’m in New Mexico with driest heat. Some days I just want to stick my whole body in a freezer. Other days I wouldn’t mind diving in a pool, even with my clothes on.

Heat makes people crazy. There’s this song by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals called “Oasis” that pretty much describes how I feel in the sun.

“Don’t let your soul lose control, let you roll down the mountain you climbed.” There’s a lot of meaning to the song, but my oasis in the New Mexico sun would definitely be a giant pool of ice cream and water slides as far as they eye can see, or that’s probably just a mirage, but either way it will get me through the hot days.
