Meetings Watch: Portales City Council - May 22

The following took place at the Portales City Council meeting Tuesday night:

  • Portales Mayor Sharon King recognized the Portales Police Department for vital public service to the citizens of Portales in a proclamation.
  • John Guldemann, project director for the U.S. 70 reconstruction project, gave an update on the project.

Guldemann said they are close to finishing phase 1 of the project, which encompasses First and Second streets from the edge of town to South Avenue C.

  • The council ratified the Finance Department's bills for April in the amount of $1.6 million.
  • The council adopted an interim budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.
  • Public Works Director John DeSha gave an update on the water well field.
  • The council approved a funding request by Sunland Inc. for $150,000 from the Local Economic Development Act fund to address quality control personnel and related expenses and a project participation agreement between the city and Sunland.

Roosevelt County Community Development Corp. Director Doug Redmond said Sunland started producing peanut butter Tuesday and its current workforce is at 100 employees.

  • The council authorized the mayor's signature on a New Mexico Clean and Beautiful grant agreement.

The city is to receive $9,400 for beautification projects, almost $2,000 more than last year.
