Late homers help Hobbs down CHS

HOBBS — The Hobbs Lady Eagles went to the long ball on Friday night.

Scoring all but one of their runs on homers, the Lady Eagles pulled away in the fifth inning for a 6-1 win over Clovis High and a sweep of their District 4-5A softball doubleheader. Hobbs eked out a 3-2 win in the opener.

Cierra Heckard hit a pair of solo homers for Hobbs (11-13, 3-3) in the nightcap. She broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff home run in the third inning, then opened the bottom of the fifth with another solo shot to make it 3-1.

Senior Maci Methola then put it all but out of reach with a two-out, three-run blast off sophomore Amanda Wright, who probably deserved a better fate. Wright went 4 2/3 innings in the second game, allowing six runs — only two earned — on seven hits after taking the tough-luck loss with a complete game in the opener.

Clovis (5-17, 1-5) got its only run in the second game on a leadoff homer to left by Bre Albracht in the top of the fifth. Junior Kennedy Sims threw a complete-game three-hitter for the Lady Eagles.

In the opener, Hobbs got a one-out RBI single to left from Anaisa Boynton in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 2-2 tie.

Lyndsi Leclear hit a one-out single in the first, took third on an error and scoring on a two-out double to right by freshman Maria Chavez for the Lady Cats. Hobbs tied it in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Alejandra Espinoza, then took a 2-1 lead on Ciara Gregory's two-out RBI single between third and short in the third inning,

The Lady Cats quickly tied it again in the fourth when Kyleigh Guthals reached on an error and scored on Ashley Gallagher's two-out triple to left field
