ENMU offering non-credit classes

Eastern New Mexico University is offering non-credit classes for children and adults this semester.

These courses are geared toward individuals who may not be enrolled as full-time students but who are looking to take classes that allow flexibility in their schedule.

Students in Julie Gawehn's zumba class practice a routine Monday at Greyhound Arena. Each class lasts an hour.

"It's kind of a way of giving to the community in terms of opportunities to have different experiences," said Kim Lutnesky, coordinator of dual enrollment and continuing education at ENMU.

"We start with kids about 5 years-old and on up with different opportunities to just have fun and learn."

Each semester ENMU offers about 20 non-credit courses. The following are non-credit classes offered this semester:

Classes for adults include welding, cardio blast, power training, zumba, one-on-one personal training, morning aqua aerobics, belly dancing for fitness, scuba diving, phlebotomy and photography. Children's classes include ballet, kids' dance, lotus seeds dance, crafts and swimming.

Some classes offer certification, such as phlebotomy, scuba diving and paralegal.

"Basically the classes are low stress versus taking a credit class where you are getting a grade for it," said Lutnesky, who has taken zumba and a bootcamp workout class.

Lutnesky said classes usually take place in a relaxed atmosphere. According to Lutnesky, each course typically has about 10 students per session.

Julie Gawehn teaches the only zumba classes offered at ENMU. Gawehn's non-credit zumba class incorporates Latin, international, hip-hop and dance music. The class is a mix of fast-paced and slow-paced music.

Gawehn said the age range of students in her class is 18-62.

She hopes by taking the class students will make improvements to their lifestyle and have fun doing it.

"I like getting to know people and helping them realize their potential and see the benefits of it," Gawehn said.

"We have a lot of return students and we have a lot of students who are trying it out for the first time."

The deadline to register for classes is Friday. Registration can be done in person or over the phone. To register call 562-2165 or visit the distance education and outreach office in the education building.
