Lady Buffs hand Zias 70-43 setback

CANYON, Texas — Junior forward Devin Griffin scored 14 points and West Texas A&M pulled away in the second half for 70-43 Lone Star Conference women's basketball victory over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday.

Chontiquah White and reserve Danielle Logan added 10 points each for the Lady Buffs (11-9, 7-4 LSC), who won for the ninth time in 11 games and beat ENMU (3-16, 2-9) for the second time in four days.

Freshmen Jordyn Cooper of Texico and Nelsha Peterson each scored 11 points for the Zias. It was a season high for Cooper, who went 3-for-3 from 3-point range.

Clovis redshirt freshman Ashlee Pierson, who scored a season-best 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Wednesday's 62-51 loss to WT, was lost to the Zias for the season when she suffered an ACL injury late in that contest.

ENMU took a 5-4 lead early on a layup by senior Hannah Altheide. The Zias never led after that, but managed to cut the margin to three points twice late in the half and trailed 30-24 at the intermission.

The Lady Buffs got two baskets from Griffin and two free throws by White to build their lead to 36-24 with 17 minutses left. Peterson ended the dry spell for the Zias, but Casey Land's basket and a 3-pointer by Brittany Williams extnded the margin to 14 points with under 15 minutes to go.

WT's biggest lead was 66-38 with under five minutes left in the game.

The Lady Buffs limited ENMU to 38 percent shooting (17-of-45), the 11th consecutive opponent they've held under 40 percent.

Meantime, WT shot 51 percent from the floor (26-of-51) and finished 7-of-13 from long distance.
