Meredith Willson's beloved musical, "The Music Man," belongs in communities just like ours.

I remember a terrific production 30-plus years ago on the postage stamp-sized stage in the old Portales Inn. Clyde Powell was lovable con artist Harold Hill; his sister Paula Criss played Mrs. Paroo, Marian-the-librarian's busybody mother.

Portales High School is bringing this all-American musical back our town in March, and you (that's right…you) are invited to participate.

PHS drama teacher Bill Strong and choir director Franklin Smith are holding open auditions three days next week, hoping to rally a cast of at least 50 residents for the fictional River City, Iowa. All ages are welcome; prior experience is not a requirement. Hopeful thespians should bring a short monologue and be ready to sing one of the memorable tunes from the show.

While PHS students are likely to snag the key roles, the production is dependent on a large cast. Those who end up extras will need to be available for all dress rehearsals the week before the performances, as well as probably 10 to 20 hours of rehearsals ahead of that, Smith said, a far lighter commitment than the principals can expect.

Auditions are 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7, and by appointment only from 9 a.m.-noon on Dec. 8. To make an appointment or learn more, call 356-7097, ext. 6201.
