Press release: Udall talks college interest rates, marriage equality

WASHINGTON – On his weekly radio call, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall discussed the Senate's vote today to prevent the interest rates on Stafford college loans from doubling on July 1. He also discussed marriage equality.

0:00 - Udall opens the call with an update on the need for Congress to act by July 1st to prevent interest rates on college loans from doubling:

0:14 - "If we fail to act, more than seven million students nationwide will face an average of $1,000 more in interest. In New Mexico, that hike would hit almost 40,000 Stafford loan borrowers."

2:35 - In light of recent news on the issue, Udall raises the subject of marriage equality:

4:00 - "Our Constitution enshrines the principle of equality – equal rights for all. Marriage is a civil right. Our courts have said so. Our government, based on the ideals of freedom and equality, should not be denying anybody's civil rights based on their sexual orientation. I believe that equality should extend to marriage. Two people, who are committed to one another, who love one another, should not be denied the fundamental right of marriage, or the legal rights that marriage includes."
