Monday morning briefing: A road show and an unmarried president

Good morning and welcome to the Monday briefing.

Road show

Portales is staging a meeting 6 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building, 200 E. Seventh St., on the upcoming construction of U.S. 70 through most of downtown.

It's a chance to learn construction plans, the anticipated project schedule, and pose questions you might have about the project.

May 14 is the target date for construction to begin.

Tools needed

There's a tool drive from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at North Plains Mall for Habitat for Humanity.

The organization needs donations of tools, building materials and home supplies.

Information: 356-8250.

It's a fact

James Buchanan was the only U.S. president not married while in office.

Kitchen tip

When making pie, sprinkle the sugar under the fruit instead of on top. This prevents pie from boiling over.
