Late goal lifts Hounds to tie

AUSTIN, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team is getting used to this overtime thing.

The Greyhounds played their school-record sixth OT contest in the last eight games on Sunday, managing a 1-1 non-league tie against St. Edward’s when sophomore midfielder Julian Roberts scored on a free kick with 30 seconds left in regulation.

Coleton Stymeist headed a free kick into the goal with nearly 10 minutes gone in the second half to give the Hilltoppers (3-5-1) a 1-0 lead. That held until St. Ed’s was called for a foul in its defensive zone, leading to Roberts’ tying goal.

The Hilltoppers had a 4-2 edge in shots on goal and a 7-2 margin in corner kicks.

The Hounds (4-2-4) return to action in a 4 p.m. Lone Star Conference match on Friday against 12th-ranked Midwestern State at the ENMU pitch.

Angelo State 3, ENMU 0 (women) — At San Angelo, Texas, Hannah Horeis had a goal and an assist Sunday as Angelo State shut out the ENMU women in LSC action.

Horeis scored with just over 29 minutes gone on a rebound shot. Five minutes later, the Rambelles’ Katelyn West took a pass from Horeis and found the back of the net for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Brandie DeBacker added a late tally for the Rambelles (4-5-2, 3-2-2 LSC), coached by former ENMU coach Travis McCorkle.

The Zias (4-4-3, 2-2-3) are back in action in a 3 p.m. (MDT) matchup on Friday at league-leading Abilene Christian.
