July 17 — Police blotter

Samplings of recent calls to Portales law enforcement, according to police records:

Wednesday

• About 4:30 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the 1500 block of South Avenue D Place in reference to a residential burglary.

A 26-year-old woman said she went out of town July 5 and returned home July 9. She noticed her 32-inch television, X-Box with 11 games and a camcorder were missing.

The woman said no one knew she was out of town except her family. She said there were people who didn’t like her and tried to steal from her before, but she wouldn’t give names.

There was no forced entry, the woman said, but one bedroom window didn’t secure. She said no one knew about the window.

The officer noted the window was at least 6 feet off the ground.

The case is inactive.

• About 5:45 p.m., a couple came to Portales Police Department to report that a tool belonging to the man’s employer had been stolen. The 47-year-old man said the $3,000 electrical crimper was stolen from the tool bin of the company utility pickup he drove.

The man said he used the tool that morning and discovered it was missing a short time before reporting it to police. The truck was out of his sight for about 30 minutes that morning when he left it for service at a business in the 300 block of West First Street, he said.

The case is active pending further investigation.

• An officer was sent to the 1100 block of North Avenue J about 8:50 p.m. to take a delayed burglary report.

A 55-year-old man said someone broke into his house and stole 14 guns worth a total of $10,000. He said he left for work at 6 a.m. and returned to find many of his guns gone at 8:30 p.m.

When the officer arrived, the man’s neighbor was standing outside the broken window. The officer went inside and saw gun cases open on the bedroom floor.

The 55-year-old said his guns were locked in his closets, but the keys to the closets had been stolen as well. The officer found signs of forced entry to the closets.

The man was going through his house, and the officer asked him to stop to avoid contaminating or destroying fingerprint evidence. The man continued to touch his property.

The man said the guns’ serial numbers were on gun cases in another closet and those had been taken as well. A bag of ammunition and a briefcase containing the title to the man’s vehicles were also gone.

The man showed the officer a roll of $100 bills and said the suspect didn’t take it even though the money was sitting on the bed in plain sight. Two high-definition televisions were left, too.

The officer took pictures of the residence, and collected a latex glove and screwdriver as evidence.

Thursday

• About 9:05 a.m., an officer went to the 1000 block of North Avenue J to take a criminal damage report.

A 31-year-old man said he pulled up to his house and waved at another 31-year-old man passing by. The second man told the first man to follow and drove to his brother’s house at a high rate of speeding, running stop signs, the first man said.

When they arrived at the house, the second man came over to the first man’s vehicle. As the first man opened the door, the second man kicked the door shut, damaging it, and tried to punch the first man in the face.

The first man blocked the punches with his hand.

He told the officer he didn’t want to press charges, but wanted a report for his insurance company and wanted the officer to talk to the other man.

The officer was unable to contact the second man.

• An officer was dispatched to the 1400 block of South Avenue I about 12:25 p.m. in reference to a report of breaking and entering.

A 50-year-old man said the residence had been vacant, but it looked like someone had been living there. He said nothing was taken but women’s clothing and other items were found inside.

The man said he didn’t know who owned the property. Officers believed the women’s clothing belonged to a woman who was the victim of a residential burglary Tuesday. The woman came to the residence and identified the items.

The property was processed and released to her. There are no suspects as to who put the items inside the house.
