Cardinals post win over Zias

SAN ANTONIO — Freshman Amber Guenther scored a pair of goals Friday and Incarnate Word kept Eastern New Mexico University winless in Lone Star Conference women’s soccer play with a 4-1 victory.

Guenther put the Cardinals (7-3-2, 5-1-0 LSC) in front just over nine minutes into the match when she scored off a corner kick by Emily Hernandez.

The Cardinals went on to take a 3-0 halftime lead. ENMU sophomore forward Brook Serrano made it 3-1 with her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 68th minute for ENMU (3-10-0, 0-6-0), heading the ball past goalkeeper Tori Puentes off a free kick by Andrea Lister, before Guenther wrapped it up with just over three minutes left with her fifth goal of the season.

Other first-half goals for the Cardinals were scored by Sydney Solomon and Sara Layendecker less than three minutes apart midway through the half.

ENMU goalkeepers Sierra Cardenas and Candice Guthrie, meantime, combined for eight saves.

The Zias are back home on Sunday for a 1:30 LSC match against Angelo State at the ENMU pitch.
