Today in history
On this day in 1972, Alabama Gov. George Wallace, a candidate for president and one of the most controversial men of his time, was shot by 21-year-old Arthur Bremer.
The next day, while fighting for his life in a hospital, he won major primary victories in Michigan and Maryland.
Wallace was noted for his Alabama governor’s inaugural address where he declared, "Segregation now! Segregation tomorrow! Segregation forever!"
