Muleshoe teen, 14, killed in rollover

A 14-year-old Muleshoe boy is dead after police say he crashed a farm truck he was driving Saturday.

Jesus Torres was driving the 2004 Ford F150 west at a high rate of speed on County Road 1038 around 2 p.m. (CST) when he lost control and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times, according to Janis Vanmeter, communications operator for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Torres and his 5-year-old brother, Irvin Torres, were ejected from the vehicle. The teen died a little more than an hour later and Irvin remains hospitalized with head lacerations and a broken arm, Vanmeter said.

Jesus Torres did not have a driver’s license, Vanmeter said, and police are still trying to determine how he came to be driving the pickup truck he crashed, which belonged to a farmer the Torres’ family was known to work for.

“We don’t know why he was driving,” she said.

Vanmeter said neither boy was wearing a seat belt.
