Border residents gather for annual celebration

For Farwell native Troy Christian, Border Town Days is a permanent fixture on his calendar.

The end of July celebration features a parade from Texico to Farwell, barbecue, music, games and vendors.

But for Christian, Border Town Days is a time for friends.

“It’s just a chance to get together with friends who come back to see us and have a good time enjoying each other’s company,” he said.

Christian said he’s made a point to attend the event since its inception.

“I’ve missed a couple, being out of town and such, but not many,” the 73-year-old said. “It’s always a good time.”

Border Town Days serves as a learning experience for Bernita Sheets of Muleshoe. Her husband Kyle Sheets grew up in Farwell and she enjoys visiting his hometown and meeting people from his life.

“I like coming to see how he grew up and his heritage. I get to meet people he knew and people he tells stories about. I feel like I know a lot about him,” she said.

The Sheets and their 10 children often make a trip to Border Town Days for what they call a ‘big ol’ family time.”

Event organizer Mike Pomper said the 43rd annual event had 43 entries in the parade ranging from antique tractors to a bike decorating contest.
