Portales man killed in rollover

A 39-year-old Portales man died in one-vehicle accident Sunday evening on a county road south of Portales, according to state police.

Jose M. Mendoza, a passenger in a vehicle being driven by his nephew, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alejandro Mendoza, 16, of Portales, was treated for minor injuries at Roosevelt General Hospital and released, according to a state police press release.

According to the release:

• Alejandro Mendoza was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier north on Roosevelt Road W, approximately 1⁄2 mile south of Roosevelt Road 7, when he lost control of the vehicle and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to rotate into a broadside skid.

• The vehicle rolled somewhat end-over-end and came to rest on its top.
