Police investigate drive-by shooting

Freedom New Mexico

A Texas man was shot in the leg during a Saturday night drive-by shooting at the Grand Avenue apartments.

Clovis police Capt. Patrick Whitney said around 8:30 p.m. William Mitchell was struck near the buttocks by a .45 caliber bullet that bounced up from the pavement.

“When the shooting started, he grabbed his daughter and started running,” Whitney said, explaining officers believe the shooter or shooters were driving past the north side of the complex on Grand Avenue and Mitchell was gathered with others in an open area between apartments.

Evidence indicates the individuals who were gathered outside the apartments returned fire, Whitney said, and police confiscated two .380 caliber pistols and collected numerous expended casings from the area where the group was standing.

MItchell was treated at Plains Regional Medical Center and Whitney said his injury was not classified as life-threatening.

Whitney said witnesses have been hesitant to talk to police.

“We’re not getting a whole lot of cooperation from the folks at the Grand Avenue homes,” Whitney said.

However he said, “We’ll be beefing up our patrols in that area (and) paying extra attention.”
