Charity raises $46,501 this holiday

The Salvation Army raised $46,501 with its Christmas projects this year, according to Capt. Tammy Ray.

The Red Kettles and bell ringers, which are the most visible community-wide Salvation Army program, raised $36,273 compared to $31,000 in 2006.

According to Ray, the results from the coins and bills put into the kettles provides food, clothes, medicine and gifts to needy families during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In addition to the bell ringers, the Salvation Army also organized the Empty Stocking Fund and Angel Trees.

Ray said $10,228 were raised for the Empty Stocking Fund and 400 families were helped with the funds. The programs raised $7,026 in 2006.

Ray said 603 children received toys, clothing and shoes through the Angel Tree program.
