The District 4-3A champion Portales Rams were given the seventh seed Saturday in the state football playoffs and will host Cobre at 7 p.m. Friday.
The lower seeding in a four district conference came as a bit of a surprise to both Ram Coach Andy Correll and Portales Athletic Director Don Gomez.
“I don’t quite understand it,” Correll said of the seeding. “But we’ve just got to hit the ground running and go play.”
Cobre comes in as the District 3 runner-up at 3-6.
Portales won the district championship Friday night with a 42-0 victory against NMMI combined with Ruidoso’s 17-0 defeat of Lovington. All three teams finished 2-1 in district, and the Rams claimed the district title through a points tie-breaker.
Seeds were as follows: 1. Robertson, 2. Bloomfield, 3. St. Michaels, 4. Socorro, 5. Albuquerque Academy, 6. Hatch Valley, 7. Portales, 8. Thoreau, 9. Ruidoso, 10. Cobre, 11. Lovington, 12. Hot Springs.
