Floyd outfoxed

Fort Sumner — The Floyd Lady Broncos traveled to Fort Sumner Thursday night in hopes of pulling off an upset and a shot at the District 3-1A crown. Instead they were defeated by Vixens in three close games, 20-25, 23-25, and 19-25.

Floyd (10-11) had played Fort Sumner twice previously and lost both contests during the regular season. In Fort Sumner they lost in four games and took the Vixens to five games before falling at home.

The Lady Broncos stayed in the hunt in all three games of Thursdays district semifinal and swapped leads with Fort Sumner until late in each contest. Fort Sumner remained cool and pulled away late in each.

“We stayed with them up ‘til the end,” Floyd coach Tandee Delk said. “They just had more gusto to get it done.”

The Lady Broncos are in the second year of Delk’s program and according to their coach they’ve been fast studies.

“We were used to being the whipping post of the district,” Delk said. They’ve come a long way.”

Delk knows her team is young and she says she believes they learned a lot from their experiences this season. The team only graduates two seniors, Blair Armijo and Christina Tenorio.

“We played well and we were in a position these girls hadn’t been in before pressure wise,” Delk said. “But we’re young too.”

The Lady Broncos played for their second night of the tournament without starting middle hitter Brooke Reed who was injured in an auto accident just before Wednesday’s game against Melrose. Delk said Reed is home from the hospital and doing better.

The Vixens (14-7) square off against Elida (20-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Lady Tiger’s home gym.
