Meetings watch: Clovis Municipal Schools Board

The Clovis Municipal Schools Board met Tuesday evening at 1009 Main St. The following is a summary of the meeting:

• Enrollment figures for the first week of school are comparable to last year, according to Clovis Schools Superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm. She reported about 8,040 students enrolled in the district’s 17 schools.

In the district’s three junior high schools, enrollment is lower than last year, she reported. Combined, enrollment has dropped by 103 students, according to figures provided by school officials.

“Kids aren’t leaving and going to another junior high school,” Seidenwurm said.

Attendance for the first week of school is not the best indication of student enrollment for the year, since a few students have yet to attend school for various reasons, including family vacations, according to school officials.

Enrollment at Clovis High School has increased from last year at this time by about 60 students.

According to school officials, it is normal for enrollment to waver slightly from year to year.

• Curricula for career readiness, math, Air Force Junior ROTC, health and social studies were approved.

• A contract for the transportation of students to and from school activities, such as sporting events, was renewed with the Adair bus company. The increased cost of gasoline is reflected in the new contract, according to Clovis Schools Director of Operations Gene Bieker.

• State allocations for roof improvements, which total about $1.5 million, were approved.

• Several bids for musical instruments and equipment were awarded.

• A contract for physical therapy services with Cameron Therapies of Portales was approved.
