ALBUQUERQUE — Sophomores Kandace Bergsieker and Jordan Roehl helped the Portales Lady Rams put together their best showing in some time in the Class 3A state track meet.
Roehl added a fourth-place finish in discus on Saturday to her second-place effort Friday in shot put, while Bergsieker finished second in the 200 as Portales finished eighth in team standings with 15 points.
Meantime, the Portales boys scored three points on Saturday to finish with six for the meet.
Roehl, who threw 35 feet, 7 1/2 inches in shot on Friday, came back with an effort of 105-6 in Saturday’s discus competition. Meantime, Bergseiker ran 1:02.11 in the 200.
“Jordan and Kandace had a great track meet,” PHS girls coach Ruth Chavez said. “They’re both sophomores, and to finish second in state is pretty good.”
The Lady Rams’ other two points on Saturday came in the 1,600 relay finale, with the team of Miriam Madrid, Samantha Henderson, Tara Johnson and Bergseiker posting a time of 4:20.23 for fifth place.
“It was a good meet for us,” Chavez said. “Lots of good things happened this weekend.”
St. Michael’s ran 1-2-4-6 in the 3,200 and placed second in the 1,600 relay — the final two events of the day — to finish with 75 points and overhaul Bloomfield, which had 73, for the team title.
The boys, who got a fifth-place finish from Jerrod Long in triple jump and a sixth in discus from Jacob Brady on Friday, added points Saturday on Amador Lujan’s fifth-place finish in the 200 in 23.08 seconds and Alonzo Ontiveros’ sixth-place showing in javelin at 152-9.
Lovington took the 3A boys team title, finishing with 67 points to 59 for runnerup St. Michael’s.
In Class 5A, Clovis’ girls got wins from seniors Aimee Hilburn in javelin and Kim Perkins in the 300 hurdles on Saturday to take team honors with 79 points. Eldorado finished second to the Lady Wildcats with 68 points.
In 5A boys competition, La Cueva scored 75 points to take the team title by 10 over Alamogordo.
Albuquerque Academy swept both team titles in Class 4A, the boys finishing with 109 points to 81 for Los Alamos while the girls had 74 points to finish 21 ahead of Moriarty.
