Clovis bar employee shot

A bar employee was shot at Clovis' Prince Street Lounge early Saturday morning, according to police.

Grant Cozene was shot once in the abdomen, according to 9th Judicial District Attorney Matt Chandler. Officials said Cozene was in stable condition at a Lubbock hospital.

Prince Street Lounge owner Kit Pettigrew was not at the scene, but he said Cozene, a bouncer, was shot when he tried to prevent a man from entering the establishment.

“It’s really simple. (The shooter) was a troublemaker,” Pettigrew said Saturday night.

The Major Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting. Unit Commander Lt. Roger Grah said there are several suspects in the shooting, but no arrests had been made as of Saturday night.

Cozene, 27, has worked at the bar for less than two weeks, according to Prince Street Lounge employee Craig Pettigrew. Cozene came to Clovis from New Orleans after his home was flooded, Craig Pettigrew said.

“This had nothing to do with the bar. It was just one of those freakish deals,” Craig Pettigrew said.

“Anytime there’s a liquor establishment police officers get calls for numerous types of acitivties,” Chandler said.

Nothing in particular, Chandler added, marked the Prince Street establishment as more dangerous than any other area bar.

“The Major Crimes Unit is thoroughly trained for handling these types of incidences and they are following several leads,” Chandler said.
