PHS qualifies three events

HOBBS — The Portales High boys track team added three Class 3A state qualifiers Tuesday in a quadrangular meet with Hobbs, Lovington and New Mexico Military Institute.

No point totals or individual places were kept in the meet.

The Rams’ 400-meter relay team of Robert Kemp, Amador Lujan, Jason Needham and Deonte Wysche posted a qualifying time of 45.1 seconds in their heat on Tueaday. Also, Lujan ran 11.0 seconds in the 100 and Bo Gabriel went 6-0 in high jump.

The PHS girls did not add any new qualifiers from their first meet last week at Jal, although Jordan Roehl beat the standard again in shot put.

PHS girls coach Ruth Chavez said senior Stefanie Sharrock turned in solid performances in field events, clearing 4-8 in high jump and throwing just over 83 feet in discus.

PHS teams are back in action on Friday in the Lovington Invitational.

Floyd drops baseball opener — The Santa Rosa junior varsity checked Floyd after the early innings and handed the Broncos a season-opening 9-4 loss on Wednesday at Floyd.

Jerrod Long hit a three-run homer to highlight Floyd’s offensive attack. Meantime, Kyle Kropf pitched the first four innings and Manny Carrillo the last three for the Broncos, each notching seven strikeouts.

“Besides a few mistakes, we played a good game,” said Broncos coach Adam Terry, whose squad had earlier games against Texico and San Jon. “I was really proud of the boys.”
