ORLANDO, Fla. — Clovis High’s Guillermo Chavez struggled badly on Friday’s final day of the 72-hole American Junior Golf Association HP Boys Junior Championship golf tournament at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Country Club & Lodge, shooting an 88 to finish at 318 and in a tie for 51st place.

Robert Gates Jr. of Gainsville, Fla., shot a one-under 71 in the final round to finish regulation play at 288, then beat Ben Leong of Orlando (72) on the first hold of a sudden-death playoff for the tournament championship.

Palmer’s grandson, Samuel Saunders of Windermere, Fla., led the tournament for the first three rounds but shot a 75 on Thursday and wound up third, one shot out of the lead.
