Clovis golfers challenging for lead

ALBUQUERQUE — A pair of Clovis golfers and high-school teammates are within striking distance of the lead after the first round of the AJGA Southwest Junior tournament Wednesday at Isleta Eagle Golf Course.

Guillermo Chavez shot a 69 and is tied for second with six others, one stroke back of leader Cornelius Carroll of Windermere, Fla., who shot a steady 4-under-par 68.

Travis Reid is another stroke back at 70 in the three-day, 54-hole tournament that features players from 17 states.

In a roller-coaster round, Chavez recorded five birdies and an eagle.

Reid, who won the Class 5A state golf title last month, made his move on the back nine, birdieing three of his first five holes.
