Cannon maintainers win top Air Force award

CNJ STAFF REPORTS

Air Force Headquarters announced Thursday afternoon that the maintenance group at Cannon Air Force Base has been named the best in the Air Force for the year 2003.

The 27th Fighter Wing Maintenance Group includes a number of different units responsible for repairing airplanes and keeping them ready to fly.

“I am extremely proud of every member of this wing,” said Col. John Posner, 27th Fighter Wing commander. “It takes a combined and focused effort to win an award of this magnitude.”

Cannon’s maintainers won a lower-level award at the Air Combat Command level in November. The new honor, known as the 2003 Clements McMullen Memorial Daedalian Weapon trophy, entitles Cannon’s maintainers to compete for the highest maintenance award in the Department of Defense.

That award, the Phoenix Trophy, is given to the maintenance group with the best performance of all branches of the United States Armed Forces.

A more detailed story is planned for Sunday’s edition.
