Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Wilson named managing editor in Portales

Kevin Wilson has been named managing editor for the Portales News-Tribune.

The managing editor oversees day-to-day operations of the newsroom. Wilson succeeds Mike Linn, who has accepted a position with the Clovis News Journal.

The Clovis and Portales papers are owned by Freedom Newspapers, Inc.

Wilson is a 2000 graduate of Eastern New Mexico University, with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He joined the Portales News-Tribune as the sports editor in May of 2000.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Kevin’s caliber able to step into this position,” said David Stevens, editor for Freedom Newspapers in New Mexico.

“Kevin knows the community, he’s a creative writer and thinker, he understands the importance of local news. That combination promises a quality newspaper for Portales. We think Mike Linn made a lot of improvements to the paper in the past year. I’m confident the depth of our coverage of local news will continue to improve under Kevin’s leadership.”

Wilson has been the acting managing editor the past four weeks.

“I’ve had a lot of great opportunities covering sports for the Portales area,” Wilson said. “I’ll still be covering sports for the immediate future, as we’re seeking to rearrange duties for our staffers. I’ll be the primary contact for news and sports.

“As a former ENMU student, I’ve seen two completely different perspectives on living in Portales. I want to see to it that I serve both of those perspectives to the best of my ability. It is my hope and intent to give the readers something interesting and newsworthy every time they pick up a News-Tribune, whether they read it from their kitchen table before work, or in the Campus Union Building before class.”
