DeWayne Bryant, 58

DeWayne Bryant, 58, of Clovis died Saturday, March 27, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 12, 1945, in Carrizozo to Annie Ruth and Leonard Bryant.

He grew up in Portales, graduating in 1963 from Portales High School. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard, where he worked in electronics. Upon discharge, he briefly worked at Southern Union Gas, then worked for Southwestern Public Service for 33 years, retiring in 2003.

He married Pat Walker on March 21, 1970, in Juarez, Mexico.

Family members said he loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. They said he was an avid fan of his grandchildren’s sporting events.

He was preceded in death by his mother; and a brother, Waylon Bryant.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years; two daughters, Jody Burrage and Shawnna Varney, both of Clovis; his father Leonard Bryant of Portales; a brother, Larry Bryant (and wife Terri) of Portales; and five grandchildren, Charlotte, Kaitlyn, and Chelsea Varney, and Cannon and Gunner Burrage, all of Clovis.

Services will be officiated by Don Weber.

Stanley Morris, Al Daugherty, Brad Bryant, Chris Bennett, Terry Reid, and Cliff Keiner will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Clovis S.P.S. Line Department.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Portales Cemetery.

Arthur H. Clark, 89

Arthur H. Clark, 89, of Portales died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at his home.

He was born Sept. 15, 1914, in Clarksville, Ark., to Mary and Jesse A. Clark.

He lived in Clarksville until late 1949, when he and his wife moved their family to Portales during Christmas. He married Kathleen Cater on Dec. 24, 1937. He worked as a car salesman for Cooper Hobbs Chevrolet and other dealerships and car lots in Portales. He owned many cars.

In 1969 he went to work at Eastern New Mexico University as equipment manager for the athletic department, retiring in 1979.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Portales Masonic Lodge No. 26.

Family members said he was an avid fisherman who liked to take his grandchildren fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Maggie Maze; and his wife, who died Aug. 3, 2001, after more than 63 years of marriage.

Survivors include a son, Herman Clark (and wife Pam) of Tucumcari; a daughter, Brenda Mann (Don) of Henderson, Nev.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jim Clark of Clarksville; and a sister, Sylvia Hurt of Irving, Texas.

Services will be officiated by the Rev. Harry Riser.

Burial will be in Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Darrow, Bill Dalley, Vern Witten, James Kyte, John Gentry and Robert Garcia.

Honorary pallbearers are W.D. Clifton, Robert Dunn, Cotton Clark and all other long-time friends.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 10 a.m. Monday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Pete Moore, 73

Pete Moore, 73, of Portales died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.

He was born Sept. 11, 1930, in Portales to Mattie and Oscar Moore.

He grew up in Arch and graduated from Portales High School in 1949. He briefly worked at the U-Bar Ranch before entering the U.S. Navy, where he spent his career and retired in 1976.

His first wife, Lillian, died in 1979. He married Beverly Russell on Sept. 9, 1983, in Portales.

Family members said his hobbies included gardening, farming and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Doyle, Micky and Troy Moore; and by his first wife.

Survivors include his wife; his step-daughter, Dixie Hightower (and husband Lance) of Houston, Texas; a brother, Buddy Moore (Nadine) of Portales; a sister, Glenda Zandecki (Richard) of Mossyrock, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Margie Moore of Portales; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Broad will officiate the services.

All of his friends are honorary pallbearers.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Portales Cemetery.
