Leonard Fenton, 78

Leonard Fenton, 78, of Portales died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Covenant Lakeside Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born on May 7, 1925, in Ponca City, Okla., to Katherine and Roy Fenton.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Ponca City. He moved to Clayton and later to Portales. He joined the Navy during World War II and served two years in the Seabees. He was discharged at the close of the war and returned to Portales. He married Faye Stewart on July 2, 1947. For a short time he worked in Portales at a service station, but in 1949 he enlisted in the Air Force. He served for more than 26 years in transportation and retired in 1975 as Chief Master Sergeant. Following retirement, he worked as a real estate agent for Master Realty until 1995. Family members said he enjoyed reading and hunting. He was a member of Trinity Family Center Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Everett Fenton; and a half sister, Lois Crane.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Dee Teal (Larry) of Portales; a sister, Emma Temple of Cushing, Okla.; four nieces and two nephews, including Larita Ledgerwood, Sandra Little, Dick Temple and Robert Temple.

The Rev. Jim Maxwell will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Philip, Stephen and Glen Fields, Sam McKinley, Lloyd Banks and Charlie Crane.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 10 a.m. today (March 16) at Trinity Family Center, formerly the First Assembly of God Church in Portales.

C.D. Lucero Jr., 69

C.D. Lucero Jr., 69, of Portales died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.

He was born on Jan. 10, 1935, in Encino to Anita and Calletano Lucero.

He grew up in Encino. He was drafted into the Army in 1954. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Temple, Texas, and transferred to the Portales Post Office in 1981 where he worked until 1992. He married Virginia Encinias on Oct. 9, 1982.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Florentino Lucero.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Terry Lucero of Jackson, S.C., Calletano Lucero (and wife, Shannon) and Ceasario Lucero (Cindy), all of Pflugerville, Texas, and Charles Alcocer of Midland, Texas; five daughters, Beverly Johnson of Jackson, Lucy Matthews of Dallas, Felipa Verrnater (Billy) of Crozet, Va., Gloria Green (Richard) of Austin, Texas, and Anita and Jimmy Morales of Temple; 17 grandchildren; two brothers, Querino Lucero of Amarillo and David Lucero of Pflugerville; five sisters, Martha Sisneros of Amarillo, Priscilla Pena and Dora Tafoya, both of Portales, Carmen Haines of Greeley, Colo., and Josie Guana of Amarillo.

A prayer service is scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

The Rev. Jim Maxwell and the Rev. Pete Jaramillo will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chris Blanton, Mark Tafoya, Christopher, Justin and Thomas Matthews, Jillian and Jimmy Morales Jr. and Michael Lucero.
