Homicide suspect found

Clovis police announced late Wednesday that a man accused of a Jan. 13 slaying has been taken into custody.

Steve Duran, 34, who had been wanted on a Curry County warrant for the death of Ricky Gallegos, was picked up at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday following a tip to Albuquerque police, according to Clovis Police Lt. Patrick Whitney.

“My understanding is a confidential informant called up the Albuquerque Police Department that he was staying at one of four locations, they staked the places out, he came out and was arrested,” Whitney said. “He offered no resistance.”

Whitney said Duran was transported to Clovis Wednesday evening and was being held in the Curry County Adult Detention Center without bond on a charge of homicide.

Gallegos was gunned down, police said, after an argument at his home in the 1000 block of Sunrise in south Clovis. When police arrived at the scene, they found Gallegos lying in a pool of blood on his kitchen floor.

Police reports indicated Gallegos suffered two bullet wounds, one in the head and one in the shoulder, and at least five shell casings were found in the kitchen of his home.

The Gallegos shooting did not appear to be related to the Jan. 4 shooting death of Carlos Murillo, police said.

Murillo was apparently pursued through the streets of Clovis before finally being shot to death.
