Local church sponsors giant food giveaway

Members of Trinity Family Center feel God has blessed the church, and in return, they want to share that blessing with others by hosting a food giveaway.

With the help of an anonymous donor, the church will give away an estimated 22,000 pounds of free food to families at noon on Saturday.

There will be no income verification required and no questions asked when Trinity Family Center begins handing out food donations in its parking lot at 601 South Ave. B.

Larry Jones, youth and college pastor at the church, just recommends that people bring vehicles, saying they will be given as much food as volunteers deem fit.

Volunteers from Open Door Ministries in Joshua, Texas, as well as from the Portales Ministerial Alliance, are expected to help distribute food. Jim Maxwell, pastor of Trinity Family Center, said other groups wanting to volunteer just need to show up at the church parking lot at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

“This food giveaway is not really Thanksgiving related, it’s just happening at a good time of the year,” Jones said. “We realize how much God has blessed us, so we’re going to return these blessings back to the community.”

“We’re going to give away as much food as people say they need, as much as they can cart with them,” Maxwell said.

Most of the non-perishable food is being brought to Portales from Open Door Ministries in Joshua.

This is the first time Trinity Family Center has sponsored such a food drive and Maxwell said it’s kind of a trial run to see how it works out. If things go well, Maxwell said more food drives will be planned.

“What this man, this donor, is wanting to do is find churches that are willing to help in the area of feeding the hungry,” Maxwell said. “It’s possible we could begin doing this on a quarterly basis, and depending on how successful we are, perhaps on a monthly basis.”

Maxwell emphasized that no food will be distributed prior to noon on Saturday. He said the distribution will begin right at noon and continue until all of the food is gone.
