Marjorie Burkel, 83

Marjorie A. Burkel, 83, of Portales, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.

Arrangements will be announced by Wheeler Mortuary in Portales.

Mary Carol Hartley, 62

Mary Carol Hartley, 62, of Clovis, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at her home.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1941, in Waco, Texas, to Laddie Earl and Mary Elizabeth McMillan Broadway.

She married Teddy Lowe Hartley on May 25, 1962, in Waco, Texas. They moved to Clovis in 1970. She graduated from Baylor University with a bachelor’s degree in 1965. She was a mother, homemaker and community supporter, family members said.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Athenean, Delta Delta Delta at Texas Tech University, Tri Delta Alumni Association, Junior League in Lubbock, director of the women’s shelter in Clovis, Cities in Schools, Board of Directors for Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce, New Mexico First, New Mexico Governor's Mansion Foundation, Democratic Party and Relay for Life in Clovis.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Tana Yarano (and husband Dan) of St. Paul, Minn.; two sons, Timothy Lowe Hartley (Alison) of Rockwall, Texas, and Taylor Lowe Hartley, M.D. of Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother, Earl Broadway of Waco, Texas; three grandchildren, Curran Hartley, Aydan Hartley and Gillian Hartley Yarano, all of St. Paul, Minn.

Steve McElroy will officiate the services.

Burial will follow at the Hollene Cemetery in Hollene.

Pallbearers will be Jerry A. McCutchin, Mark White, Dr. Charles E. Jones, Dr. Hugh R. Burch, Dr. Robert L. Clement and Armand L. Smith.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Clovis.

Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church.

Evelyn Simpson, 85

Mrs. Evelyn “Dinger” Simpson, 85, of the Bethel area, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Jal.

She was born on Jan. 19, 1918, in Portales, to Mary and Benjamin T. Miller.

She grew up in the Bethel community, working with the rest of her family on the farm and dairy. While she was attending high school she drove the school bus. After graduating from high school, she continued to drive the bus and attended classes at Eastern New Mexico Junior College in Portales. She married Melvin Simpson on April 18, 1942. Family members said she was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed quilting, dancing and painting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, B.F. Miller; four sisters, Juanita Onstott, Mary Turner, Clara Rector and Hazel Walker; and by her husband.

Survivors include four sons, Mel Simpson (and wife, Glenda) of Grants, Mark Simpson (Christine) of Skiatook, Okla., Mike Simpson and Howard Simpson (Teresa), all of Portales; three daughters, Meloy Hill (Buddy) of Jal, and Mary Jane Simpson and Clarene Mead, both of Portales; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Lee “Hoss” Miller of Portales; four sisters, Essie Belle Helm of Lincoln, Ark., Opal Parker of Las Lunas, B-Etta Campbell of Alamogordo and Maxine Smith of Elida.

Chaplain Russell Hill will officiate the services.

Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, nephews and her many friends.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Portales Cemetery.

Sybil Stricklin, 69

Mrs. Sybil J. Stricklin, 69, of Albuquerque, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at her home.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1934, in Portales, to Newman and Fay Carter.

She was a Mother Advisor of Rainbow for many years in Albuquerque and a member of Beta Sigma Phi. Family members said she enjoyed bowling, sewing, needlework, collecting Indian memorabilia and miniatures and she will be missed.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Ray Stricklin; her parents; and a step-mother, Pauline.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Stricklin of Albuquerque; two daughters, Marla Stricklin and Darla Bakke (and husband, Lonnie), all of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Sean, Nicole and Jordan Bakke and Jacob Stricklin, all of Albuquerque; a brother, Jerry Carter (Ana) of Dade County, Fla.; a sister, Gloria Inge (Bob) of Portales; two step-brothers, Ray and Alfred Corzine; a step-sister, Marnell Turner; and many nieces and nephews.

Scott P. Reeves will officiate the services.

Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday at Wheeler Mortuary in Portales.
