Clarence Stanfield, 91

The Rev. Clarence L. Stanfield, 91, of Hobbs, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Hobbs Health Care Center.

He was born on Oct. 11, 1911, in Grady, to Clyde and Clara Stanfield.

He served churches in Clovis, Portales, Goldsmith, Texas, Van Horn/Sierra Blanca, Texas, Raton, Gallup and Albuquerque. He was pastor for eight years at Jal/Wink Methodist churches, building a new parsonage and church in Jal. He was the volunteer chaplain for the Albuquerque Police Department. He was a member of the Board of Pensions for the New Mexico Methodist conference, president of the Rotary club twice, once at Jal and once at Gallup.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma; two brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include a son, David Stanfield (and wife, Linda) of Edgewood; two daughters, Joyce Kemper (Freddie) of Hobbs and Sharron Bennett (Dr. Ed) of Jonesboro, Ark.; a brother, Clyde Ray Stanfield of Albuquerque; a sister, Gladys Thomas of Grady; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Todd Dyess will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Grady Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Jal.

Arrangements are by Smith-Rogers Funeral Home of Lovington.

Services are at 3 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Hobbs.
