Marilyn L. Huber, 72, of Portales, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.

She was born on April 24, 1931, in Roswell, to Alta and Glen Wheeler.

She was raised in Roswell and was named Miss Roswell in 1947. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and the University of Colorado, where she received a bachelor’s degree in education in 1954 and a master’s degree in 1969. She married Bob Huber on June 21, 1951, in Raton. They lived in Roswell for a number of years before settling in Santa Fe in 1963. She began teaching at Sweeney High School until retiring in 1990 when she and her husband moved to Portales.

She taught for several years at Eastern New Mexico University and Pep High School in Pep, Texas. She was a literary agent for her husband and her daughters. She was a member of the National Education Association.

Family members said her many hobbies included writing short stories, painting fine china and computers. She enjoyed collecting fruit jars, Indian artifacts and various other items.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Glen Huber; a brother, Clarence Wheeler; and a sister, Evelyn Hobson.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Tracy LeCocq and Holly Huber, both of Roswell; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
