Buffaloes win in OT at Logan

LOGAN — Junior James Walker scored on 6-yard run on fourth down and added a single-point conversion run as Melrose outlasted Logan 35-34 in overtime Friday night in a six-man clash.

Neither team led by more than eight points in the game. The Buffaloes (4-1) were down 28-20 when Jason Runyan sacked Logan’s Kirk Burns for a safety. After the free kick, the Buffs got the tying touchdown with 37 seconds left on a 10-yard pass from Brock Graham to Harvey Park.

Melrose overcame the loss of sophomore running back Carlos Ruiz, who may have suffered a torn ACL in the first quarter. His status for the rest of the season is questionable, Buffs coach Dickie Roybal said.

“It was an exciting game,” Roybal said. “I thought our kids overcame a lot of adversity. With Carlos out, we’ll have to rearrange a lot of kids now.

“Logan ran ‘smash-mouth’ football at us. They’re big, and I thought (Logan) coach (Billy) Burns did a great job. It was a big win for us at their place.”

Park caught a 17-yard pass from Callie Clark to put Melrose on the board first 1 1/2 minutes into the game. Burns got that touchdown back less than 30 seconds later on a 55-yard run.

Graham hooked up with Caleb Dodd on touchdown passes of 10 and 5 yards for Melrose’s other scores.

For the Longhorns (2-3), Burns added scoring runs of 13 and 30 yards, while Brett Sanders ran eight yards for a touchdown and caught a 15-yard TD pass from Burns. The latter came in overtime and gave Logan a 34-28 lead.

Foxes trounce Cloudcroft

FORT SUMNER — Ryan Fikany scored three touchdowns and Roel Canales and Brandon Vinson added two touchdowns each as Fort Sumner, ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, cruised to a 53-0 win over Cloudcroft on Friday night.

The Foxes (4-1) piled up 518 total yards while limiting the Bears (0-5) to just 79 yards, including only six net yards rushing.

Veteran Fort Sumner coach Mario Martinez said the Foxes bounced back well from last week’s 23-16 loss at Class 2A No. 1 Santa Rosa.

“I was pleased with the overall effort and that everybody got to play,” Martinez said. “It’s always nice when kids that practice all the time and don’t get to play a lot can get in.”

Senior quarterback Jameson West threw for 111 yards, including scoring passes of 39 yards to Canales and 15 to Fikany, and also rushed for a team-high 92 yards on just five carries. Canales also scored on a 66-yard run, while Fikany ran 26 and 4 yards for touchdowns and Vinson had scoring runs of 3 and 33 yards.

“Jameson West threw the ball well,” Martinez said. “Roel Canales caught a nice TD pass from Jameson West and had a nice touchdown run. He hadn’t had any real big plays this year, so it was good to see that.”

Fort Sumner’s last touchdown, early in the final period, came on a 24-yard pass from Derek Dimitroff to Byron Wilson.

Wolverines blank Cuba

CUBA — The Texico Wolverines went a long way for a rout on Saturday.

Junior quarterback Braden Vaughan scored three touchdowns and Texico compiled 448 total yards — all on the ground — in a 69-0 drubbing of the homestanding Rams.

Texico (4-0) built a 34-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and cruised to victory over the Rams (0-5) in its fourth consecutive road game of the season.

Vaughan scored on runs of 4 and 39 yards in the first quarter and 35 yards early in the third period — his only carries of the day. Senior Mark Peabody led Texico’s attack with 123 yards on five carries, including TD runs of 43 and 59 yards.

Justin Garrison added a pair of touchdowns, including one on a 56-yard return of a Cuba field goal attempt that was blocked by Jared Curtis.
