On Sunday afternoon, Clovis and Curry County residents finally experienced a slight break in the weather, with a cloud cover that brought sprinkles of rain and cooler temperatures.
After days of unrelenting, triple-digit temperatures and sweltering summer sun, the cool-off provided welcome relief.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, Sunday’s weather was not the actual start of a cool front, although temperatures are expected to taper off during the week.
“Sunday’s lower temperatures were probably just a gusty outflow from storms in the area,” said NWS meterologist Jeff Michalski. “Even in Albuquerque, temperatures dropped 20 degrees (Sunday).”
However, Michalski said a little bit of a cool front slipping down into New Mexico for the beginning of the week will mean a change in the temperatures and some chance for rain this week.
Today’s high is expected to be about 94 degrees, with a chance of thunderstorms this evening in the Clovis area.
“It looks like it will cool down more Tuesday, with highs in the upper 80s,” Michalski said.
For Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, highs will continue to be in the mid- to upper 80s, with temperatures climbing back into the 90s by the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service.
A slight chance of rain remains in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.
