Second man arrested in double slaying

A Clovis man was arrested and charged Wednesday with two open counts of murder in the February shooting deaths of Alex Rodriguez and Wesley Griest.

Dominic Murphy, who turned 25 on Tuesday, was also charged with one count of felon in possession of a firearm, three counts of tampering with evidence and eight counts of intimidation of a state’s witness.

On Tuesday, Curry County Sheriff’s Investigator Waldo Casarez obtained an arrest warrant for Murphy.

Early Wednesday, Curry County Sheriff’s Deputy Tony Young, with assistance from New Mexico State Police and the Clovis Police Department, served the warrant and arrested Murphy, according to Curry County Sheriff Roger Hatcher.

Joey Gabriel Martinez, 26, also is charged in connection with the double homicide west of Clovis.

Murphy and Martinez are being held in the Curry County Adult Detention Center on $100,000 cash-only bonds, according to jail officials.

In addition to the murder charges, Martinez faces unrelated charges in connection with several drive-by shootings, officials said.

On Feb. 28, road construction workers found the bodies of Rodriguez and Griest in the middle of Curry Road U just south of Curry Road 7.

Autopsies showed both men died from gunshot wounds to the head.

“Investigators received a break in the case on April 2 when they learned that Joey Martinez, a suspect in some drive-by shootings, may have been the shooter in the homicides as well,” Hatcher said.
