School Board discusses budget

The Portales School Board met Tuesday night and discussed a tentative budget for the 2003/2004 school year that has been dwindled thanks to unfunded federal mandates set forth by the Legislature.

Murphy Quick, principal at Portales High School, said that even after scraping for funds Portales Municipal Schools could be in the hole $450,000 next year, according to the tentative budget.

Board members are searching for ways to cut spending.

No decision was made on the budget, and the board will meet again at 7 p.m. on May 5, where board members plan on making a decision on a reworked budget.

The Legislature approved House Bill 212, which promises teachers across the state a six percent increase in salary beginning the second pay period in December.
