  • Surveillance request rules need tightening

    Updated Dec 21, 2019

President Donald Trump has long maintained the FBI investigation of former Trump policy adviser Carter Page was a politically motivated witch hunt. Whether you agree or disagree, the numerous, serious and potentially systemic failures in the FBI investigation have got to shake your confidence in the system. Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz released his 400-plus page report on the investigation this month and testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He found the opening by the FBI of the...

  • Business feature: Guadalajara restaurant returns

    Mathew Brock - Staff|Updated Dec 17, 2019

Area residents have another chance to taste some local history. The Guadalajara Mexican restaurant is back after 12 years. Once a local staple, the restaurant closed in 2007 after nearly 70 years in business. "I grew up here and I've been around here my whole life," owner Michael Mendoza said. "My granddad taught me how to cook in the 1980s and after he passed my mother ran it while I cooked for her. She was the boss but retired in 1998 and my wife and I ran it until 2007."...

  • Life without my glasses has been weird

    Karl Terry|Updated Nov 23, 2019

Here are a few signs that your cataracts might be progressing faster than you thought. 1. You’ve increased the font size on your computer and mobile devices so much you never get a full sentence on one line. 2. Road signs fly past before you can read them. Either the car is getting faster or reading has become more difficult. 3. You actually get into the wrong vehicle. Granted it was same make and model and nearly the same color but the potpourri air freshener was the g...

  • Grateful I don't live in California

    Kent McManigal|Updated Oct 15, 2019

Sometimes it’s hard to remember to be thankful for life’s little blessings. Recently I was reminded to be grateful I don’t live in California. My electricity went out for a little while a few days ago, but the power company was on the ball and power was restored in no time; long before it could have become inconvenient for anyone but the least prepared among us. By contrast, the electric utility in California plans to shut off power to hundreds of thousands of its payin...

  • Cause for outage undetermined, but power restored

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 10, 2019

CLOVIS — Power has been restored to about 3,400 Xcel Energy customers in west Clovis. The power went out about 9:15 a.m. Thursday and was out until about 10:45 a.m. Those impacted included 11 public schools, including Clovis High. School officials said students remained in class during the outage. A school news release said district officials “closely monitored the situation,” and the primary concern was related to food preparation. “Student Nutrition worked in collaboration with the New Mexico Department of Health to moni... Full story

  • Supporting alcohol measure on ballot is vote for freedom

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Oct 5, 2019

Voters in Curry and Roosevelt counties are being asked whether alcohol sales should be permitted in the unincorporated areas of the counties. Let’s hope they approve. Yes votes don’t mean alcohol is good. Yes votes mean private business owners get to decide what’s best for their businesses. And we might even see a few more private businesses pop up around the region. The language on the Nov. 5 ballots will be the same in both counties: • Do residents wish to allow the sale, service and consumption of alcoholic beverag...

  • Seasons are changing in more ways than just one

    Karl Terry|Updated Sep 28, 2019

Once upon a time we had seasons of all sorts. These days things sorta just run together like melted Neapolitan ice cream dropped on a summer sidewalk. This past week as I set out to the store I asked the wife if she needed anything and she replied she really wanted a TV Guide magazine. I pointed out that she was actually holding a guide in her hand and if she pushed the left button a menu would appear on the screen. I guess she was feeling nostalgic for the days when the TV Gu...

  • Hope Sixth and Hines stays forever

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jun 8, 2019

I don’t get out to Tucumcari as much as I would like. Nearly every time I’ve been there, it was for a work related reason, and we have staff in Tucumcari far more competent than me to handle Quay County news. But I have good memories of the time I was interim managing editor there for four months while we searched for a long-term editor. The Rattler basketball team made the state tournament for the first time in more than a decade, the police chief wore his Atlanta Braves gear on casual Fridays and the Blake’s Lotab...

  • Landall's Box Office closing

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jun 1, 2019

PORTALES - Landall Goolsby loves movies. The idea that he'll no longer own a business that rents them is difficult regardless of the words he chooses to define it. "We're retiring the Box Office," Goolsby said Monday. "That sounds more fun. It just gets to a point where you get exhausted. We're not afraid of hard work, but it just got harder." And so, the Portales landmark known as Landall's Box Office begins its last days, with a closing date of June 19. It's been part of...

  • Portales hotel caused a stir

    Betty Williamson|Updated May 18, 2019

Portales' first skyscraper - in my lifetime known as the Plains Hotel and the Portales Inn, but sadly empty since the 1990s - recently received an extensive renovation. It has reopened as the Best Western Plus Portales Inn at 223 W. Second St. We're all invited to a grand opening celebration from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday hosted by the Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation and Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce. With all due respect, they'll have trouble...

  • Commission grants license to brewery

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Mar 9, 2019

CLOVIS — For the third time in 15 days, the Clovis City Commission created another place to grab a beer. For the third time, it passed 7-1. The commission granted a beer and wine license to Red Door Brewery at 120 Maple St., inside Mainline Bowl. The commission also granted a small brewer off-site location license for on-premises consumption only. Matt Biggs, owner of Red Door, was the only person to speak during the public hearings for either request. The site in question is more than 1,000 feet from any church or school, a...

  • Local fans gear up for Super Bowl

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Feb 2, 2019

Most of eastern New Mexico's NFL rooting interest was eliminated a few weeks ago in the second round of the playoffs when the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Los Angeles Rams. But when the Super Bowl between the Rams and the New England Patriots kicks off tonight, Dennis Maes of Clovis and Zac Harmon of Portales will be rooting for their favorite football team since childhood. Maes, 28, is a Rams fan. Born and raised in Clovis, Maes told The News on Friday that he probably would...

  • Dinner and a show at Habitat fundraiser

    Betty Williamson, Columnist|Updated Oct 2, 2018
    1

Occasionally the stars align in eastern New Mexico to make for a perfectly quirky evening. That happens Thursday. Habitat for Humanity of Roosevelt and Curry counties is hosting its annual fundraising meal, and the Eastern New Mexico University Department of Theater and Digital Film-Making opens a comical revue of Shakespeare’s works for the first of five local performances. Poor William Shakespeare probably never got to try a jalapeno bratwurst. More’s the pity. For...
