  • Letters to the editor: Do not let governor decide race

I read your recent article about the poll your newspaper conducted in our state Senate race. I noted the large number of undecided voters and would like to pose a question: Would those voters like Santa Fe to choose our next senator or would they like to choose this person? Thank you and please remember to vote. Laurence R. Hansen Clovis Woods will do right by constituents Months ago, I looked at the race for the District 7 state Senate seat and saw two candidates with "faith and "family" at the center of their campaigns....

  • Letters to the editor: Spears will not compromise values

Angie Spears is an independent, honest woman with strong Christian, family values. That's why I support her personally. But I also support her candidacy professionally, as the district attorney, because she comprehends the dangers of the law that allows illegal immigrants the right to a New Mexico driver's license. She will fight to repeal it. She pledges not to compromise with liberal legislators on this issue, and understands it must be repealed — period. She will be a public official we can all be proud to call our own. Ma... Full story

  • Letters to the editor: Mudslinging gets worse every election season

This year's political campaigning is absolutely sickening. Every day we are inundated with flyers about one of the candidates. Every other evening we are called about how we are going to vote. At this point in the campaign, I really think we should have a candidate who would be absolutely loyal, can't tell a lie and loves people — namely my dog, who unfortunately passed over the Rainbow Bridge. I don't know where all this mudslinging has come from, but there is no way anyone in our house will vote for a mudslinger — even if...

    Albuquerque Journal

Champion. Celebrity. Big-hearted. Troubled. Addict. Every life is filled with victories, complications and contradictions, and so was the life of Albuquerque native Johnny Tapia. • Driver's licenses do not make roads safer

    Kent McManigal CMI columnist

I find it somewhat disturbing that both candidates in the District 7 Republican state senator primary race consider violating the fundamental human right of free travel a pressing issue. The "most significant local issue," in fact. Of course, this violation is dishonestly framed as ending the issuance of "driver's licenses" for "illegal immigrants." It is strange that the people most in favor of this out-of-bounds abuse of authority are also the ones who most often advocate restoring the Constitution to its position as the... Full story

  • Silence helps us hear God's voice

    Joan Clayton PNT religion columnist

Many voices compete for our attention. The demands of employment, family obligations and other activities seldom leave a quiet time in our busy schedules. Finding time is important for bodies and souls. Let's get alone with God and keep silent. After all life can only be lived one day at a time. We can only accomplish a task one at a time and it takes some silence. I like to read this scripture when I'm stressed. "Be still and know that I am God I will be exdalted among the heathen, I wil be exalted in the earth" (Psalm 46:10...

  • My turn: Fun activities mixed with weekend of chores

    Alisa Boswell

Some of my Memorial Day weekend was tedious, I'm sad to say. I had a long weekend away from work as many others did, but each day contained tedious tasks which had to be done, such as cleaning, computer work and car work. But despite all these tedious tasks, I had a lot of fun mixed in, including a barbecue and a trip to the zoo and the shooting range. I enjoyed a Sunday afternoon gathering at a friend's house with fajitas and some great games of water pong, which is beer pong with water rather than beer. I've never had much...

  • Accepting Jesus adoption into God's family

    Judy Brandon CNJ religion columnist

I heard a wonderful true story last week that personifies for each of us the words in Romans 8:15: "The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'" The young parents were nervous. They climbed out of the car and the dad unhooked the car seat with the sleeping infant inside. Behind the couple came the young man's parents, his sister from out of state, and a host of other friends from... Full story
