  • Rams rule 4-3A picks

    PNT Staff

The Portales Rams unexpected romp through Class 3A football has resulted in a Ram boon on the All-District 4-3A list, including landing seven Rams on the first team. The Rams placed three players on the first-team offense: senior offensive lineman Chris Christensen made the first team, as did senior running back Cruz Ontiveros and junior quarterback Chris Mosier. Mosier led a potent Ram rushing attack that confounded opponents all season, in just his junior season, his first as Portales’ starting signal caller. “Chris was a u...

  • Farwell girls down youthful Lady Bronchos

    CNJ Staff

Bovina’s Jesus Rocha grabs for a loose ball during Thursday’s boys quarterfinal matchup in the Farwell Invitational. (CNJ staff photo: Andy DeLisle) FARWELL — Grady girls coach Alicia Rush still gets nostalgic when she returns to her alma mater. In her eighth season at Grady, Rush could only sit and watch as Farwell beat the Lady Bronchos 47-29 in a first-round game of the Farwell Invitational decided by turnovers and strong inside play. “I never played (in the new gym),” Rush laughed, “but I have plenty of memories in the ol...

  • Free throws lift Zias past Lady Aggies

    Freedom Newspapers

Eastern New Mexico University’s Elizabeth Richards jumps to block a shot by Oklahoma Panhandle State senior Nina Kuleff during Thursday’s game at Greyhound Arena. (CNJ staff photo: Andy DeLisle) PORTALES — Thanks to solid free throw shooting down the stretch, the Eastern New Mexico University Zias have matched the best start in team history. With senior guard Heather Brown leading the way, Eastern converted 11-of-13 free throws in the final 3:13 to hold off pesky Oklahoma Panhandle State 77-70 on Thursday in a non-c...

  • CHS GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lady Cats romp into semifinals

    Eric Butler

RIO RANCHO — It was a split decision for eastern New Mexico’s prep girls basketball teams Thursday at the Mel Otero Invitational. Clovis earned its way into the semifinal round with a 64-38 victory over Highland, while Portales lost to Los Lunas 33-24. For the victorious Lady Wildcats, the final winning margin of 26 points was a bit deceptive as Clovis (4-0) was nursing a six-point margin with less than a minute to go in the third quarter. What ignited the fourth period runaway was accurate 3-point shooting that had been mis... Full story

  • Some things one must see to believe

    Bob Huber

Before sunup each day, an east-west train rumbles through town while everyone sleeps. The engineer pulls a rhythmic whistle cord on the east side of town, and he doesn’t stop until he breaks out on the west side. By the time the last car chugs by the canning factory, everyone in town is awake, ready to face another day. But they don’t know what woke them up. They’re unaware that they’ve been roused by train whistles. Whenever I’ve mentioned this unique citywide alarm clock, I’m not believed. No one heard any train whistles. T...

  • Christmas carols not always music to everyone’s ears

Now that the holiday season is in full gear — whether one likes it or not — it’s less painful to fight it than make the best of it. I only say this because my brain is mush from being beaten down from endless streams of seasonal songs. While Christmas carols are meant to infuse one with the tender grace of a loving season, I’ve seen far more people block their ears in frustration, flick off the radio in disgust or kick a speaker when they hear the opening tinkle of “Jingle Bells.” This was in August. Carols have, by far, bec...

  • New Mexico not without its share of troubles

    Don McAlavy

My sister and her daughter told me to write about myself sometime. They live in Texas, so what do they know about New Mexico? But here goes. Whenever I come to a stop sign, 10,000 cars are waiting right down the street to pass by before I can get a chance to get on that street. It never fails to happen. Around Clovis we call it the “Kilmer Law,” something like Murphy’s Law, which says if anything can go wrong it will. My buddy Harold discovered this law while waiting two hours at one place to get onto 21st Street. At the b...

  • Military life can be difficult

People seem to have an uncontrollable desire to share their opinions about the war in Iraq with me, a simple yet exuberant military wife. A conversation usually starts with questions such as, “Where is your husband right now?” and “When is he getting back?” It quickly progresses to heavier topics about the evils of this war and why we should pull the American military out as soon as possible, and culminates with the reasons why I must agree with these views, especially in light of the fact that my husband could loose his life... Full story

  • Lady Rams lose low scoring game

    Freedom Newspapers

The Portales Lady Rams opened the 2006 Mel Otero Rio Rancho Invite with a 33-24 loss to Los Lunas Thursday afternoon. Turnovers plagued Portales (1-2) against Los Lunas (3-3), although future Eastern New Mexico University player Clarissa Krum did her part to do in the Lady Rams, too. Krum finished with 11 points and six rebounds while dishing out four assists. Last year, Krum was a critical player in a loss to Portales in the same tournament. “I missed two free throws to win last year, but I told myself that’s old his... Full story

    Freedom Newspapers

RIO RANCHO — The Clovis girls basketball team was taught a physical lesson on Friday, but it’s one that Lady Wildcats coach Miles Watters hopes will benefit his squad in the future. In the semifinals of the Mel Otero Invitational, Sandia knocked off Clovis 57-45 to move into the championship against Rio Rancho, a 39-34 winner over Los Lunas. The Lady Cats (4-1), who won last yea’s Rio Rancho invite, will contend with Los Lunas for third place tonight. Portales, at the same tourney, defeated Onate 47-45 on Friday and will...

  • Santa comes to town

    Helena Rodriguez

The Grinch didn’t exactly steal Christmas, but he did help Borden Peanuts capture the best business float award during the annual Christmas parade Friday night in Portales. The giant trailer-turned-sleigh featured the Grinch of Dr. Seuss fame and 30 Borden employees and their families who threw candy while their mascot handed out bags of peanuts. With everything from John Deere tractors to Christmas-lighted Jeep vehicles and even a festive forklift included, hundreds of Roosevelt County residents watched the 18 lighted e...

  • Baby boom — PRMC hopes to expand maternity unit

Kristin Cross holds the second of her three boys — Jensen — to be delivered at Plains Regional Medical Center. (Staff photo: Andy DeLisle) Snuggled inside the hospital is a place that brings babies, such as tiny Jensen Cross, into the world. Less than 24 hours old, Jensen almost disappeared Friday beneath a blanket in the arms of his mother, Kristin Cross. Of her three boys, Jensen is the second Cross has delivered at the Plains Regional Medical Center Women’s Unit. “You feel at home here, under the circumstances,” said Cros...
