The Rams (10-1), seeded second in the Class 4A state playoffs, invade third-seeded Lovington (7-4) in a 1 p.m. semifinal clash. Even though PHS won the earlier district meeting 35-13, locking up its fifth consecutive district title, Rams coach Jaime Ramirez figures this one will be tougher on the Wildcats’ home blue turf. “We know...

  • A dash of national recognition and a swirl of nostalgia

    Betty Williamson|Updated Nov 19, 2019

Portales' Terri Doerr was watching television on her computer a couple of weeks ago - "mainly ignoring the commercials," she said - when a voice came on that she'd not heard in person for almost two decades. It was her father, Jimmy Self, singing a fragment of a song he wrote and recorded at the Norman Petty Studios in Clovis back in the 1950s. "You're everything I'll ever need to make my dreams come true," Doerr heard her father singing. "You're my recipe for happiness ......

  • Never underestimate the extremes

    Tom McDonald|Updated Nov 19, 2019

A trio of op-ed pieces in Santa Fe’s New Mexican on Nov. 10 captured my attention. One was from the governor, another from an activist, and the third from a naysayer. Let’s start with Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s column. Headlined, “Our environment is endangered,” it’s a forceful column that lays out her administration’s intention to wean New Mexico off oil and gas — a tall order for a state that depends so heavily on the extraction industry. The column starts by blasting the Trump administration’s withdrawal from t...

Freshman Claire McDaniel was also part of that blue-trophy-winning team. Now, Texico girls basketball head coach Richard Luscombe would like those players to carry some of that championship swa...

  • Time to end settlements made in secret

    Updated Nov 19, 2019

Words like “blackmail” and “coverup” have been tossed around. That might overstate what prompted New Mexico to shell out $2 million in taxpayer dollars to two groups of women who alleged discrimination and retaliation by top officials in the state Department of Public Safety — money paid as the clock ran out on the administration of Gov. Susana Martinez. But there is an element of cloak and dagger surrounding the role a secret recording of a conversation involving the governor’s husband, Chuck Franco, played in the cases....

  • Political animosity will only increase

    Kent McManigal|Updated Nov 19, 2019

Are you concerned over how divisive politics has become? Do you notice the growing intolerance for opposing opinions? Do you wish everyone could go back to a time when there was civil debate and people could agree to disagree? Yet, at the same time, do you support using government and its legislation against others in ever-increasing ways? You can have a civil society or you can have government control; you can’t have both. Government has been allowed to get too big, p...

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 19, 2019

CLOVIS — For those who might need a helping hand during the holiday season, Parkland Baptist Church has been hard at work on Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings.
