    Ron Warnick - Staff Writer|Updated Nov 19, 2019

RIO RANCHO – Logan stunned top-seeded and previously unbeaten Melrose 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 in the Class 1A volleyball championship Saturday after the Lady Buffaloes mostly dominated the Lady Longhorns this season. Melrose was hoping to notch its seventh volleyball championship and its first undefeated season since 1983. Instead, a jubilant Logan squad delivered a three-peat in state championships to its coach, Robert Young, at the Santa Ana Star Center, including a title victor...

  • Texico rallies to make it six straight

    Ron Warnick - Staff Writer|Updated Nov 19, 2019

RIO RANCHO – For Texico, call it six the hard way. The top-seeded Wolverines volleyball team captured its sixth consecutive state championship Saturday, but it had to get past an upset-minded, fifth-seeded Mescalero Apache team that Texico had conquered in three sets the day before. Texico prevailed 23-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-12, 15-11 in the Class 2A title game that took nearly 2 1/2 hours to complete at the Santa Ana Star Center. Riley Rohrbach's kill on match point enabled t...

  • Storm's a-coming to Clovis

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Nov 19, 2019

CLOVIS — There is no place Clovis High’s football team would rather be. It’s the third week of November, only four teams remain in the state 6A playoffs. Clovis is one of them, still something to practice for, still something to play for. And there is no place the second-seeded Wildcats would rather play this weekend’s 6A semifinal against third-seeded Cleveland than at Leon Williams Stadium, which the ’Cats will do this Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. Then throw in the early-wee...

  • Mondays spent with coffee, adrenalin and a prayer to God

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Nov 19, 2019

Here we go again. It’s Monday morning. Mondays come after Sundays, and, like most pastors, I tend to be toast on Monday mornings. Brain dead but breathing. It’s not the best day to write, but the deadline for this column is noon on Mondays. Someday, when pigs fly and twits quit tweeting, I’ll embrace some discipline and manage to write days before the deadline. But I like to think that I write best with adrenaline pumping and coffee fueling neurological fission. If I wait...

  • Whatever games you play, make sure you have fun

    Natalie Williams|Updated Nov 19, 2019

My favorite video game is Call of Duty: Ghosts. Lots of people play games. I think it’s really interesting how video games started out on these arcade machines and are now everywhere. Did you know Pong was one of the first arcade video games? My dad bought this old video game console. It’s a tiny box and you flip a tiny switch and it turns on. It has about 6,000 games on it. My favorite one to play is Tetris. I’m not good at it, but I still like playing it. There have been so many game consoles. PlayStation 4 Pro 1TB is th...

  • Grateful to be exactly where I am in life

    Carrie Classon|Updated Nov 19, 2019

My husband Peter likes the “edge season.” He told me this as we watched the moon rise over the mountains and felt a chill breeze rise with it. As far as I know, Peter invented this expression. He might have meant the “season’s end,” but I like the idea of the “season’s edge” better. Peter and I are staying in the south of Spain and, even here, the season is changing. Restaurants that have been open all summer and fall are finally giving their employees a few days off. Menus are changing, hours are shortening, outdoor tables...

  • Stormy weather this way comes

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Nov 19, 2019

Weather forecasters on Monday began warning about “two significant storm systems” expected to bring widespread rain — and possibly 40-mph winds — to eastern New Mexico today and Thursday. The phrase “significant storm systems” tends to attract our attention. If it doesn’t, it should. Our Chambers of Commerce are quick to point out our average daily temperature is 57 degrees and we have about 300 days of sunshine every year. But we are also famous for our extreme weather. Consider: • On Feb. 1, 1967, much of the region saw...
