  • Serving others routine duty for veterans

Living facts surround and embody Veterans Day across America today. This visible network makes up the ranks of our families and our neighbors' families. They join many of us in visiting the graves of veterans across this land on this day. And they are the women and men we work with, go to school and church with, or just say hello to in a public place, day after day. They are integral to the woven strength of the patriotic and humanistic fabric making up these United States of America. Their actions have followed those of our...

  • Feral pig describes recent election

What I would like to do today is shift focus. Instead of writing about current events, let's together pick a single animal that most reminds us of the election. I'm talking about the election held Tuesday. You may have already blocked that election from memory. It was kind of like going to a really bad horror movie. You would just as soon forget it. That critique is not meant to address the results nor the quality of most of the candidates. The outrage is the almost criminal tactics of candidates and associated PACS who...

  • Freedoms trampled in the dirt

Sharon Faulkner of Portales mailed pieces of a voter registration card inside the envelope that also contained this letter: Well, another fake "election" — driven by corruption, voter fraud, over 20 million illegals and a paper-trained Party, rank and file, and Rubber Mouth gets another four years of uncontrolled dictatorship. So, now we have Obamacare, illegal amnesty and taxes shoved down our throats and see our freedoms trampled into the dirt. Oh, well. I don't have a country anymore and I have torn up my voter card so I...

  • Child battles cancer

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

People shouldn't let 9-year-old Jaelyn Jimenez' shy demeanor fool them because her mother says her strength and creativity comes from within. The Portales native who has career aspirations of becoming a cook and a veterinarian is far from normal, as her mother describes, because most 9-year-olds aren't battling leukemia. "God chose me because I'm strong," Jaelyn said. Christina Calloway: Portales News-Tribune Amanda Jimenez embraces her daughter Jaelyn, who says her mother has been her biggest supporter while she's battled le...

Portales American Legion Post 31 is celebrating the Veterans Day holiday on Sunday with its 66th annual Tribute to Veterans ceremony with guest speaker Command Chief Master Sgt. Paul Henderson II, the highest ranking enlisted airman at Cannon Air Force Base. Joe Blair, a Navy veteran, legion member and coordinator for the event, said the tradition has been important to the Portales post because it is important to recognize all veterans for their services. "We also pay tribute to the POWs and MIAs every year with a special...

  • My Turn - One shouldn't lie to co-workers

For those expecting cultured election pearls, my deadline was pre-election. If your candidate won, congratulations. Hopefully, you are being gracious. If you voted for Bond C or the Green Tea Party, thank you! I recently visited Lubbock dermatologist Richard Hope for my twice-yearly, skin-cancer checkup. With a dozen surgeries so far from carefree and sunscreen-free east Texas summers filled with catfish-splashing ponds, evergreen lakes, blistering hayfields and chattering baseball fields, karma has been a beach without an...

  • Local Brief - U.S.70 to be completed soon

U.S. 70 construction should be finished this week, according to a press release from the New Mexico Department of Transportation and Constructors Inc. Traffic will move from the south lane to the newly constructed north lane. Most intersections will be opened on Second Street, according to the press release. Only one lane of traffic will be open from Avenue K to Avenue C so officials said to expect some delays during peak traffic hours. • ENMU alum works overseas as a copywriter

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

Portales is a long way from Bad Nauheim, Germany. But after Eastern New Mexico University alum Camala Beek graduated in the fall of 2010, Bad Nauheim became her new home where she works as a marketing and communications specialist and copywriter for a public relations agency. The 23-year-old was quite the well-rounded student while at ENMU. She was originally recruited from the small town Cheyenne Wells, Colo., to play volleyball, but she also sang in the ENMU Choir and was the floor director for KENW's Sports Look. "I had...

  • Recycling offends some people's sensibilities

This fall I'm watching Peyton Manning, one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL follow in the footsteps of Bret Favre. They both had stellar careers as heroes of the game. But as their retirement drew near, they signed with a desperate team in hopes of one more year in the spotlight. In a small town with high unemployment and a poor economy, a local entrepreneur named Del converted open space into a recycling center. He takes everything from plastic bottles to scrap iron. It has become a small success. He has at least two...

  • Q&A: Veterans group members talk about prize-winning parade float

Compiled by CNJ staff wirter Kevin Wilson

Judges during the annual Clovis Veterans Day Parade took a look at a float with the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell and America's founding documents, and realized pretty quickly that's where the parade's traveling trophy would go. American Legion and American Legion Riders Chapter Post 25 is the place it goes, and stays, year in and year out. The 2012 win is the seventh-consecutive for the veterans support group. The float was pulled by a red vehicle that formerly served as the red promotional vehicle for 99.9 KTQM,...

  • Veterans offered their lives for us

    Clyde Davis CMI columnist

There are moments when one wonders exactly what goes through the mind of another person, or more accurately group of persons, to cause them to act in the way that they do. Such a moment is almost bound to occur, when we as a nation have a presidential election, which of course happens once in four years, conjoined with Veterans Day. As a lifestyles columnist, it isn't my place or forte to address political issues; such addressing is only tangential to my focus. This column, however, concerns being a military veteran; it is...

  • Spouse brief - Honor veterans, their families

    Rebecca Adling

On November 11th we set aside a day to honor all those who are serving or have served in the military. It is a chance to recognize them for making the sacrifices that enable Freedom to continue for the rest of us. Those sacrifices can range from giving up a comfortable bed and hot shower to the loss of life or limb. When it comes to honoring those who serve, taking a moment to reflect on the many unmentioned sacrifices is warranted. Those who serve are often at the mercy of the military when it comes to the city they live...
