  • Portales schools closing Friday due to COVID

    Updated Jan 21, 2022

PORTALES – Public schools will close in Portales on Friday due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, according to Superintendent Johnnie Cain. In a letter to parents, Cain said three schools in the district have reached a 5 % positive case rate, while three others are close to that percentage. State guidelines require schools to activate an enhanced COVID Safe Practices Plan when positivity rates are high, which includes closing for one day and deep cleaning. “Therefore, all schools will be closed on Friday, January 21 so that cus... Full story

  • Clovis schools calling off classes for Thursday

    Updated Jan 19, 2022

CLOVIS -- Potential for hazardous weather and ongoing staff shortages has led to Clovis Municipal Schools canceling classes for Thursday. Classes are scheduled to resume on Friday, said Jelayne Curtis, the district's executive legal administrative assistant. "It just gives us a day to reset," Curtis said. Plus, she said, school officials don't want students having to contend with frigid temperatures and the potential for snow. School officials said last month the district had 47 teaching openings, including 21 at the... Full story

  • Lady Cats bounce back against Lovington

The Staff of the News|Updated Jan 19, 2022

LOVINGTON — Less than 24 hours after losing big at undefeated Class 5A second-ranked Volcano Vista, Clovis High’s girls quickly got back on the winning track on Saturday. It’s a game the Lady Wildcats probably should’ve won, but it helped erase the sting of Friday’s 54-26 loss to the Hawks in Albuquerque. Getting back on that bus early on Saturday, the Lady Cats improved to 13-5 for the season by dismissing Lovington 59-30 as sophomore guard Zarai Lewis led three players in double digits with 15 points. CHS girls coach Jef...

No warrants had been issued for arrests on Tuesday. Police said the teenager was shot in the driveway of a Mora Street re...

Parmer County’s acting sheriff, Eric Geske, said Tuesday the pair were riding in a 1998 Chevy Suburban when their southbound vehicle was stopped by Bovina Police on U.S. Route 60. When police approached the vehicle, Geske said, it drove away south on U.S. 60. Police pursued as the Suburban drove south on U.S. 60. About halfway between Bovina and Farwell, Ges...

Parmer and Bailey counties will have a combined six contested Republican primary races on March 1, with a three-way race to fill a vacant county judge seat. Will Anderson, who is retired from the U.S. Navy and as a college ins...

  • Wintry temperatures in forecast

    Updated Jan 18, 2022

The region's mild winter may be coming to an abrupt halt. A mostly sunny afternoon today is expected to turn into frosty, possibly snowy, weather tonight. And the trend will likely continue through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. “If we get any (moisture), it will be overnight Wednesday,” said Dan Heerding, Clovis' emergency management coordinator. “Could make for a messy Thursday morning commute.” But Heerding added, “The ground is really warm so it might not amount to anything. I hope I am wrong as...

  • Still smarter to stay cautious with COVID-19

    Updated Jan 18, 2022

Recommendations from the Biden administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention seem to change weekly regarding coronavirus precautions. Americans are justifiably confused and are at risk of tuning out. For a Democratic administration struggling to create the appearance of command authority during an ongoing national crisis, the mixed messaging feeds the Republican narrative that Democrats are incompetent. Americans should, first of all, remember the pandemic response under the previous administration. President...

  • McManigal: Pay attention; it's your responsibility

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jan 18, 2022

There’s almost no one more dangerous than a driver who refuses to yield because they have the right-of-way. I’ve known people who got into accidents because the other person was supposed to move over or slow down, and didn’t, and they weren’t going to let the other guy “win.” When two drivers of this sort encounter one another, have your camera recording. Personally, I think it’s more important to avoid an accident than to be “in the right.” I’ve tried to teach my kids that th...

  • McDonald: Governor's agenda ambitious

    Tom McDonald|Updated Jan 18, 2022

Sometimes politicians govern. Sometimes they campaign. Most of the time, it’s hard to tell the difference. Take, for example, Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s legislative agenda for this year’s 30-day session. It’s ambitious and aggressive, and just in time for her re-election bid. In her first three years in office, Lujan Grisham has accomplished a lot, thanks to her party’s domination of both legislative chambers and a growing surplus in state revenues. This combination of power and money gives her the ability t...

  • Commonplace might be uncommonly good for us

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jan 18, 2022

The commonplace. There’s a lot to be said for it, I think. By the way, if you do an internet search for “commonplace,” you may be surprised to find that, for more than a few centuries, a “commonplace book” or, simply, a “commonplace” was a book or notebook in which people wrote down and kept quotations, sayings, notes of all sorts, little bits of helpful knowledge, poems, recipes, measures, verses, and much more - stuff that just seemed useful to them and worth keeping handy...

  • Dons hold off CHS for dual win

The Staff of the News|Updated Jan 18, 2022

CLOVIS - West Las Vegas came in with a less-than-full roster on Saturday, but the Dons were able to hold off Clovis High's first-year boys program in a 37-27 victory at Rock Staubus Gym. West Las Vegas had to forfeit four weight classes between 145 and 182 pounds, and actually trailed the Wildcats 27-25 at that point. But the Dons got first-period pins from Juan Martinez at 220 and Francisco Villa-Lopez at heavyweight to finish out the dual. CHS coach Eric Zottneck said his...

The Staff of the News|Updated Jan 18, 2022

  • CCS rides early lead past Logan

    Dave Wagner|Updated Jan 18, 2022

CLOVIS — Clovis Christian’s boys have been rolling most of the season. With 10 consecutive wins, though, the Eagles are about to get into the meat of their schedule. Junior guards Noah Gershon and Carter Teune each scored 26 points on Saturday night, and the Eagles fought off a comeback bid by Logan to beat the Longhorns 74-58 in the District 6-1A opener for both teams at the CCS gym. On their remaining 13 contests, the Eagles (10-2 overall) have two games apiece with district rivals Fort Sumner (7-2) and Melrose (8-3), a r...

  • Local newspaper archive downfall of my free time

    Betty Williamson|Updated Jan 18, 2022

When it comes to the perfect venue for frittering away massive amounts of time, local newspaper archives are my downfall. I’ve spent most of my life in eastern New Mexico, so it’s always great fun to scroll through newspapers on the hunt for familiar names and events. But, honestly, I wouldn’t have to know a soul to appreciate the gems that regularly made it into print in older papers. I just blew most of a morning in a single issue of the Portales Valley News from 90 years...
