  • Finding choice parking spot is divine

    Helena Rodriguez

According to New York Times best-seller Caroline Myss, synchronicity is an intellectual code for “divine action behind the scenes.” Using the example of “parking angels” she says synchronicity is when the right parking place shows up in front of you when you‘re running late. During Labor Day weekend, I dreaded finding a parking spot at South Plains Mall in Lubbock when I went to meet my daughter, Laura, to buy decorations for her baby shower. Laura got to the mall with her in-laws first and they had to park far away. When I g...

  • Government wants to track you online

    Freedom Newspapers

The Internet is developing so rapidly that users typically discover only after the fact that their privacy was invaded or their private online activities were revealed to strangers. Safeguards don’t seem to keep pace. That’s troubling if, for example, a private marketer stealthily follows your online activities, as the Wall Street Journal has reported, or if trusted online sources permit others access to users’ personal information without their knowledge or consent. It’s bad enough when private organizations track or shar...

  • Government wants to track you online

    Freedom Newspapers

Dr. George Peach Taylor Jr., says he doesn’t yet know if President Obama’s defense budget for fiscal 2012 will propose higher TRICARE fees for military retirees or any other beneficiary group. If past budget requests are any guide, going back deep into the George W. Bush’s presidency, then higher TRICARE fees could be sought anew and perhaps now a more deficit-conscious Congress will be receptive. But in a phone interview, Taylor, who serves temporarily as the Defense Department’s top health official, mostly discuss...

  • Landlines, phonebooks failproof

    Kevin Wilson

Of all of the messages I hate to see on my phone, the worst one comes from … the phone itself. The weekend was rough on me, even before we consider the Texas Rangers ballclub I’ve followed since the early 1990s. There were high points, but the low point had to be my phone, repeatedly telling me the system was crashing. I never had to deal with landline crashes in Townsend, Mont., growing up. Heck, I only needed four numbers to dial friends in our small town up until high school, when we finally needed to use the ... Full story
